Screwfoot, I was asked to post this for "LTS" he seems to be having issues posting right now...
Hi Screwfoot,
"Great comment and it’s good to have a reminder about the site’s rules. Indeed, I carefully checked the rules before posting – including rule No. 8. My questions were intended to follow the rules. (Rule No. 8: “Don’t talk about other brands of surfboards here. This is the HARBOUR site and not intended to be a public forum.”) In retrospect, I suppose I should have referred to the designs without identifying the persons associated with their shapes but I wasn’t sure that would I could accurately convey the design’s shape in a short space, e.g., stubby hull, long fish, reinforced step deck. Also, since the heretofore (used only for theatrics – “we” don’t’ really speak this way) shapers are more boutique guys that seem to have either fully or partially retired without carrying on their label, I thought it might be okay. (I don’t know the other shapers either.)
But I asked the questions out of genuine interest – I love California surf history. I’ve picked up more than ½ dozen Harbour boards over the last few years to try and figure them out. Of the designs I brought up, I don’t understand the purpose of them, their naval architecture (surfboard engineering) or how they ride. I’ve searched this site, and others. I don’t get it. And since Rich is a godfather master shaper that has heavily influenced surfboard design, I was hoping to learn what he thought about the shapes, e.g., “good for X but no market for them,” or “they’re hype, if they were any good there would be market, “ or maybe “perfect for a long point break, but that’s it; we could make one for you if you’d like.” Of course, which Harbour shapes would ride similar to these shapes, if any? And if Rich is too much of a gentleman to knock someone else’s shapes publicly, maybe someone could pass along a private conversation they’ve had?
Finally, I’m looking for more than a used board swap meet. I recall a thread initiated by Boardhound: “Is surftalk a board swapmeet now?” (“Rich has a vast knowledge of surf related topics. Let’s see who can get a topic going that peaks all of our interest.”) I like surfing and I’m interested in learning about design.
Of course, while I wish I could figure out how to change that silly Yuku moniker, I’m back to “billable” work….
