Single fins can get plenty of drive, though the board's shape has to work with the fin. Thrusters could never snap or thrust as good as a high aspect low area single fin reconnecting with the water after the boards been sliding slideways on rail only. That's not a trick I could pull on a longboard -- still I'm unresolved whether the 3 fin set up is really optimal for a longboard.
OW's HP-1 with a 10" HP fin forward sounds like an interesting way to go on a solid day.
I think you might want to avoid extra nose width that will hang you up on a big face - you don't want to get stuck at the top if it starts sucking out. If you do get stuck high, try to run up and hang ten, it won't save you, but you'll get points for attitude.
The Habanero and Wingpin sound like they are made for the more serious surf you are contemplating, and its a truly manly endeavor. Longboards in big waves - not something for the shortboard era faint of heart (e.g. me). If it were me I would trust in Rich's recommendations...
